GlobalWelsh, Wales’ growing grassroots diaspora organisation, announces that advertising legend, Rory Sutherland, is to host a GlobalWelsh Academy masterclass at Tramshed Tech in Cardiff on the evening of 25th June 2019. Rory, deemed one of the most influential advertising professionals in the world, will join 120 guests for the masterclass he’s titled ‘How to be a marketing Druid’.
GlobalWelsh Pioneer Rory grew up in Usk, Monmouthshire, and was schooled in nearby Monmouth. He left Wales for the University of Cambridge over 30 years ago and upon graduation he went on to forge a stellar career in the advertising and marketing industry.
Much of Rory’s career has been spent in London with Ogilvy UK (previously Ogilvy & Mather), one of the largest and most renowned marketing and advertising agencies in the world. Once described as ‘the worst graduate they’d ever hired’ he made his way through the ranks to his current position as vice chairman.
On his upcoming GlobalWelsh masterclass, Rory comments: “The term guru is overused – and besides it is a monstrous act of cultural appropriation. And, as Michael Gove rightly reminds us, people are sick of experts. No, what Wales needs now is more druids. People who can challenge perception, who will experiment and explore the realms of possibility, where even the most obscure ideas make sense – where the magic happens.”
One of GlobalWelsh’s objectives is to bring world class Welsh diaspora back to Wales. To share knowledge, insights and alternative points of view that will inspire and enthuse entrepreneurs, business leaders and talent within Wales. Walter May, founder and CEO of GlobalWelsh, said:
“Rory is shining example of a member of the Welsh diaspora who left Wales as a young person, crafted himself an incredible career, and now wants to give back. As GlobalWelsh it’s our job to bring world class people like Rory home, so we can tap into their global perspectives and knowledge bank. It’s guaranteed to be a thought provoking and entertaining evening that will surely leave us challenging perceived norms and forming new perspectives.”
